Breaking the Chains of Pastoral Poverty: A Call for Change in 2025

As a pastor, the responsibilities are heavy, and the calling is profound. However, many of us have grown accustomed to living on the edge of financial insecurity. The stark reality is that far too many church leaders find themselves battling against the narrative of the “starving pastor.”  I want to share a message of liberation and hope: it's time to rewrite this narrative. We can change the way we think about pastoral ministry and financial health once and for all.

Change Your Narrative

From time to time, we hear the heavy sighs of our fellow clergy regarding their financial struggles. The idea that being a pastor equates to a life of poverty is a narrative ingrained in our culture. I have witnessed firsthand how this mindset limits our mindset and our ministries. Yet, with a fresh mindset, pastors can start to demand better for themselves and their families.

In my conversation with fellow pastors, I emphasize that “you have the ability to change the narrative of the starving pastor.” It’s all about taking that first bold step. Rather than accepting the status quo, we can aspire to a new definition of what it means to serve in pastoral roles—one that embraces both spiritual and financial well-being.

When we recognize that our calling doesn’t have to coincide with financial hardship, we are free to pursue a more fulfilling and sustainable way of ministry. Rather than martyr ourselves in service, it’s crucial to remember that our church communities need thriving leaders, not burned-out souls. The choice is ours. The focus should shift from surviving to thriving, and by doing so, we can fortify our communities.

Embrace New Opportunities

The essence of pastoral work has shifted significantly over recent years. Increasingly, we see the opportunity for pastors to engage with the marketplace. This isn’t merely about earning a better salary; it’s about revitalizing our calling and effectively ministering to our congregations in new ways. The intentional and strategic movement of pastors into the marketplace could not only benefit pastors, but also their churches and the communities they serve.

We no longer need to cling to the outdated notion that our only value lies within church walls. Many people are recognizing that our experiences, skills, and faith can offer great value in broader contexts. By stepping out of traditional roles and into entrepreneurial ventures, pastors can experience financial success while continuing to serve.

Imagine creating new ministries that provide jobs, community service opportunities, and support to those in need—all while putting an end to the destructive cycle of pastoral poverty. The possibilities are limitless if we embrace the spirit of innovation and collaboration.

Take Action

I understand that laying the foundations for these changes can feel daunting. It often requires us to confront insecurities and fears. The reality is you will feel a lot of discomfort around it in the very early days. But as you push through that resistance, good things are waiting on the other side.

The first step is acknowledging that progress is often uncomfortable. Whether it's launching a business or simply changing the way we interact with our congregations, every little action matters. Refusing to act, meanwhile, keeps us stuck in place, enduring the very hardships we wish to rise above.

I cannot stress enough how essential it is to take bold action in 2025. With every action taken, we gain clarity and insight. Often, the next step only becomes visible once we make that courageous leap into the unknown. So, let’s commit together to take that step—let's turn our dreams into plans instead of idle thoughts.

Build a Supportive Community

One of the greatest gifts we possess is the ability to connect with one another. We don’t have to shoulder the burdens of change in solitude. I encourage every pastor to seek out support and guidance from mentors or networks that inspire you. In our EntrePastors community, I witness the beauty of collaboration every day. Most importantly, I’ve seen the faithfulness of nurturing relationships—those who seek camaraderie experience greater accomplishments.

We can’t aspire alone. Together, we can support one another’s ventures, cheer each other on, and uplift one another when the going gets tough. This community isn’t about competition; it’s a fellowship, a space to brainstorm and collaborate. Taking risks becomes less intimidating when you have others beside you, cheerfully pushing you forward.

Moreover, I firmly believe that surrounding ourselves with diverse ideas and experiences enriches our own ministry. When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, open to feedback, and receptive to shared stories, we create a nurturing environment for personal and congregational growth.

A Vision for 2025

As we peer into the horizon of 2025, we must ask ourselves what kind of legacy we want to leave. Is it one of mediocrity and distress, or one that tells a story of resilience and prosperity? I genuinely hope for the latter. Now more than ever, pastors have the chance to influence the future.

What I envision for us are ministries that thrive, with leaders who feel valued and are compensated fairly for their work. By taking intentional steps, leaning on one another, and forging a new narrative, we can provide the guidance and encouragement necessary to uplift our communities.

I cope with challenges of pastoral life, as many of you do, but I believe wholeheartedly in the potential for vibrant change. Remember, you don’t have to wait for change to come to you; you are empowered to be the change. Reject the narrative of the starving pastor, grab hold of your calling, and let’s redefine what it means to be spiritual leaders.

Together, let’s make 2025 a landmark year—a year filled with influence, faith, and above all, hope. The days ahead are bright, and your actions today will set the stage for a remarkable tomorrow.
